NEW ALIEN REGISTRATION REQUIREMENT CAUSES CONFUSION - WHAT WE KNOW
Trump reintroduces immigrant registration, requiring proof; his Congress address spreads lies about immigration & crime.
The Trump administration began two weeks ago with a new program that has not been used for decades, which is that every person who enters the United States must register with the federal government and also carry proof of registration with them at all times. For many years this law had not been used and immigrants did not have to do it, but now the Trumpers are requiring it as another way to harm immigrants.
We still don't know when it will take effect because they don't have the application yet, so there's no need to panic. You also have to understand that many people will probably already be registered, for example people who are legal permanent residents, people who have applied for a work permit before and have been in programs like TPS, DACA or who entered with the I-94 and people who have been in deportation courts with immigration.
People will first have to create an online account to register. We are asking people to wait a little longer, to find out exactly how the program works and what kind of punishments will be applied if they don't, when we have more information I will be giving you more details. Many pro-immigrant groups will also file lawsuits against the implementation of this program.
I repeat, if you are already registered for any of the situations mentioned, don't worry, and if you are not, wait a little longer to find out the details and requirements.
TRUMP'S CONGRESS ADDRESS FULL OF LIES AS USUAL
On Tuesday night President Trump gave his annual address to Congress and as always he couldn't resist attacking immigrants. Although he insisted that they were having a lot of success in their campaign against immigrants, he continued with his lies and misleading information. Trump made many false statements about immigration, insisting that the country had faced an unprecedented crisis that former President Biden had left a disaster with the borders completely open, which we know is false, millions of people were detained at the border during Biden's term, another big lie from Trump is that in the last 4 years more than 21 million people entered the United States and that many of them were murderers, human traffickers and gang members.
These figures are not true, between January 2021 and December 2024, according to the border patrol, more than 10 million people were arrested entering the United States from Mexico without permission, and many of these had been arrested on multiple occasions, especially during the pandemic, and yet they represent a much smaller number than Trump said had entered.
He also continued to attack Haitians and the crisis in Springfield, Ohio, recalling the case of the famous cat that they had supposedly eaten and was later found in the lady's house, as well as the alleged gang members who had destroyed entire buildings in Colorado when there was no evidence. He also said his famous line that murderers, drug traffickers, gang members, and people from psychiatric hospitals made up a large percentage of those who entered the country, when there are no statistics proving this and the majority of immigrants entering are, as always, people looking for a better economic situation or escaping persecution in their countries.
He also tried to use particular tragedies such as the murder of student Laken Riley in Georgia and Jocelyn Nungaray in Texas. Obviously this is very sad and nobody defends these types of crimes, but this does not mean that a large percentage of immigrants are dangerous criminals, especially when statistics show that immigrants, including undocumented immigrants, commit fewer crimes than US citizens.
It is sad to know that there are people who believe Trump's exaggerations to reinforce discrimination and hatred. Hopefully people will start to open their eyes and see what Trump is really doing, about his lies that most of the people arrested now, although far fewer than he thought he would deport in the first few weeks, are criminals, what is more, most of them have no history of significant crimes other than being in the United States without permission.
We expect that when there is a labor shortage in many sectors such as agriculture, hotels, construction, factories, etc., and the economy begins to worsen even more, people will begin to open their eyes. We must continue to fight with programs such as sanctuary cities and counties, although they are currently under attack from the Republicans, with legal actions and organizing politically against Trump's abuses and continuing to educate people that hate and xenophobia are not the answers.
